What is a platform bed?
A platform bed is a type of bed that just accommodates a mattress and generally comes with either wooden slats or solid panel which make up their base. The difference between a platform bed and a normal bed is that a normal bed has box springs contained within the frame where a platform bed doesn’t. Like other types of bed there are many different types and sizes of platform beds from basic designs to more complicated space saving designs which often have storage of some form  underneath the bed. This space saving feature is one of the reasons why platform beds are becoming more and more popular today with more people living in smaller and tighter  accommodation all looking for ways of maximizing space.

Another reason why platform beds are increasing in popularity is their style as they can look very stylish and modern and are often seen in housing showrooms, furniture displays and more commonly on the many TV programmes that focus on house style and design. This is a clear indication that in the not so distant future that the platform bed will become the bed of choice.

But why choose a platform bed over a conventional bed, cabin bed or bunk bed?
The answer to this question depends on a number of factors:

Who the bed is for? - would a platform bed be suitable for and elderly person - possibly not with the bed being lower  down and the base having corners, or a child who might be better off with a themed cabin bed. A platform bed offers a more stylish solution for the more modern thinking person.

What type of room space is available? - Is there enough space to accommodate a larger bed or is space limited. If space is limited there are many different types of platform beds that have storage areas underneath the bed which make it a sensible choice providing a practical and stylish choice of bed.

What is the purpose of the bed other than to sleep in it? - Does the bed need another function like extra storage space or is it just to look stylish and is there to compliment the decor or theme of the room.

In summary a platform bed can offer a range of functionality similar to  cabin beds, but offers much more in terms of style and design to all other types of bed making it a popular choice.

Cabin beds

cabinbedCabin beds are a increasingly becoming one of the most popular choices of bed as they are a not only a comfortable place to sleep, they also provide ample storage areas for a normally tight space environment. They give a person the essential sleeping area using a mattress like other beds but unlike other beds they are raised from the floor and are generally accessible by a ladder. This then provides an opportunity to utilise the space  underneath the bed and create storage areas like cupboards, shelves or drawers or even an area to put items on like a dressing table.

Other common uses of the space provided include a TV or PC area where a TV or monitor can be  mounted and used to watch DVDs etc, play gaming consoles or in the case of most young people, surf the internet and do homework. Some often come with seating  to accompany the TV/PC area which almost turns the cabin bed in to sofa bed.  The space could also be used to just provide a desk for use to sit a laptop on or write a document.

The majority of cabin beds are aimed at the child or younger adult market as these groups are generally the type of people who make the best use out of them. There are themed cabin beds for younger children ranging from a princess castle theme for girls with flags and turrets to a pirate ship theme for boys complete with mast and sails, transforming their bedroom in to a different world of enjoyment and excitement. You can get some that look like a dolls house, some which look like  soldier forts and even cabin beds with slides attached all providing a fun way to sleep and making the bedroom environment a pleasant and fun experience. Older children or younger adults would probably prefer beds that have storage underneath i.e. wardrobes, shelving or drawers.

Overall cabin beds offer more of an experience over a other beds providing a stylish space saving piece of furniture that can also come with a practical or fun element attached with it. More and more families are turning to a cabin bed over a bunk bed or a platform bed for their children as they maximize space in tight area, which in today’s economic environment is what people are doing rather than buy larger accommodation they are making do with what they have  using space saving furniture.

What Type of Platform Bed Should I Buy?

I always find that this can be a difficult question to answer as there are many different Platform beds available on the market today. The key question is who is the Platform bed for?

platform2If it is for a younger child’s bedroom i.e.  kids beds then there are  platform beds that will provide comfortable place to sleep combined with a fun area to play or store things as some have have shelves styled like a bookcase and storage drawers beneath. The obvious question would then be whether its going to be a platform bed for a girl or a platform bed for a boy as they also come in a variety of colors. There doesn’t seem to be the range of children’s themes available like you get with the cabin Beds but the platform bed can still offer the functionality of shelving and drawer storage which is invaluable in a child’s bedroom.

If the choice of platform bed is for an older child or young adult then there are many that provide a stylish but comfortable place to sleep combined with adequate storage space suitable for clothes or games etc. Not only are platform beds a place to sleep they often become a stylish piece of furniture making the bedroom look very modern and if your an young adult a cool place to be.

If the choice of platform bed is for an adult there are many different options as there are many different styles. Most adults main reason for choice will be the look and style of the bed including the color and the material it is made from. But there are so many platform beds  on the market that can be stylish, modern and offer something else like additional storage. This factor can also be very influential in the decision making process and is  another great way of saving on the space required to house a set of drawers or cupboards.

Whatever the choice you make will be the right choice, as the platform bed, like a sofa bed or a futon sofa bed can be a multi-functional space saving piece of furniture regardless of the style you choose. With the current housing climate more and more people are looking at maximising space in their existing homes and are turning from a traditional single bed frame to space saving furniture like a platform bed with a futon mattress to achieve their goal.
